In the Get to know SaaShop team series, we introduce you to the employees of SaaShop.
Greatman Lim is one of the longest-serving employees at SaaShop. Residing in East Helsinki, he leads a small commune of six people. His family relocated to Finland from Cambodia in the late 1980s, fleeing the aftermath of Pol Pot’s regime.
At SaaShop, Greatman serves as the R&D team lead, overseeing both managerial duties and coding tasks. He acts as a liaison between the management team and developers while ensuring resource allocation and task clarity within the team.
Coding demands focus and tranquility, which Greatman provides as a shield against the influx of requests from the management and other SaaShop employees.
Appreciation for Innovation and Technological Opportunities
Greatman joined SaaShop as a developer three and a half years ago in 2021 and transitioned to the role of R&D team lead in the spring of 2023. He was drawn to SaaShop’s modern technological choices and valued the opportunity to utilize the most efficient tools over the most popular ones. In R&D, Greatman was intrigued by the chance to innovate and explore new technologies.
This aspect significantly influenced Greatman’s decision to apply to SaaShop. He values innovation and the opportunities technology presents in his work. It was only later that he gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for the company’s business idea:
“Only later have I begun to understand and appreciate the business idea! I believe SaaShop has a unique business concept and I see great potential in it.”
Greatman uses versatile developer software in his work. For coding, he uses Neovim and Tmux. To manage and document tasks, the team uses Atlassian Jira and Confluence, among others.
The Dancing Coder in free time
Outside of work, Greatman Lim is not only a skilled coder but also a competitive bugg dancer, coaching and volunteering at Comets, the largest rock’n’swing dance club in Finland. He also served as the chairman and vice-chairman of the University of Helsinki Ostrobothnia Dance Club for four years, promoting Finnish ballroom and swing dance culture.
As dance almost becomes his second job, Greatman unwinds by snowboarding in the winter and fishing and camping in the summer.
Greatman’s Tips for Working in a Startup Environment
Greatman emphasizes the resilience he has developed at SaaShop and how the work atmosphere facilitates receiving help. Roles may not always be clear and can change during employment, so adaptability to new roles is crucial.
“As a characteristic, it would be desirable for a person to be ‘caring,’ genuinely interested in what other staff members are doing and how the company is doing overall. Good qualities for employees could also include self-direction, the ability to be one’s own supervisor.”
